COVID-19 Status

17 March, 2020 (UPDATED 22 March, 2020)

In response to the ongoing public health situation, from Wednesday, March 18, The Book Merchant Jenkins, West End, will be closed to the public until further notice.

We will continue cataloguing books and sending out online orders while that remains possible.

You can also place orders which we will wrap and you can pickup from our drop point on Doris St. Phone 07 3844 9926 or email

If you are already self isolating and need reading material see the Quarantine Box option on our website or phone or email a selection of topics and we can put together a box of books to tide you over.

If you have no money because you are isolating and without benefits let us know and we will send you some bargain books within the Brisbane inner-city area free of charge.

I feel stupid closing the doors before public health officials tell me to and I worry that I won’t be able to pay the outgoings, but I feel worse sitting here in an open shop waiting for government action to make me feel financially safe to close, or the sickness to strike me, my staff, or you down.

How can you support the bookshop:
1) Order a book online.
2) Purchase a Quarantine Voucher to spend in-store later.

On a more positive note I hope to spend this time reading, cataloguing books, making art, and dancing around the bookshop like a weirdo. I hope you stay healthy and may art get you through.

Kind regards,

Yarran “The Book Merchant” Jenkins
