A book about literature—its simple pleasures and the sophisticated enemies of facile enjoyment. These enemies being not philistines and earnest amateurs, but those with a social agenda to grind upon the brow of writers whose work predates their modern and post-modern critiques. This collection of essays comments widely: across Kipling and Pound in the salubrious, esteemable corner, through to sci-fi, limericks, and pornography in the neon/pop-lit corner. The bent here is conservative, the language is plummy, the brow is high, and the author’s apparent intention is to live up to his surname.

Tape repair, staining, and discolouration to jacket. Minor abrasions to endpapers. Minor foxing to edges. Very Good Condition.
