Referencing the work of German Egyptologist Dr. Alfred Wiedemann, the author discusses ‘The Book of Respirations’ in relation to Christianity. Also called ‘The Book of Breath’, respiration referred metaphorically to all the aspects of life that the deceased hoped to experience again in the afterlife. Wilkinson draws parallels between Osiris, in his transition from human to divinity through his communion with his sun-father Ra, and the Christian narrative of Jesus, suggesting ‘The Book of Respirations’ to be prophetic, and discussing its relationship to the birth of the Church in Egypt. He also explores the metaphorical and literal mechanism of breath through the role of the lung in physiology. Wilkinson was a devotee of Emanuel Swedenborg, Swedish pluralistic-Christian theologian, scientist, and mystic.
