Sweven is the pseudonym of John Macmillan Brown (1845-1935) who was Chancellor of the University of New Zealand from 1923 until his death. First reviews of this groundbreaking work of science fiction noted that its philosophical content surpasses Plato, that it is a “tour de force of scientific imagination,” and that its author is “in advance of Darwin and Rousseau as a thinker.” The Island of Progress is the second of a two part story in which a utopian society is described in great detail. If you care for great science fiction, rich with philosophical and technical imagination, this is for you.
