Scarce photography book of 1940s-1970s dance of and by Tsai Jui Yueh (1921-2005). Regarded as the “mother of modern dance in Taiwan”, Tsai first studied professionally under Baku and Midori Ishii in Japan. She returned to Taiwan after World War II and started the first dance school in Tainan. She married Indonesian-Chinese poet Lei Shih-yu and moved to Taipei. Both suffered from government persecution, Lei deported and Tsai imprisoned on Green Island. After her release she reopened her dance school and despite government pressure continued dancing and teaching. In 1983 Tsai moved to Brisbane, Australia, where she continued teaching until the late 1980s. This copy is inscribed by Tsai Jui Yueh to Evan Jones, former lecturer in ballet at Queensland University of Technology. No copies recorded in OCLC at June, 2020.
