Ogdred Weary is one of several anagram pen-names used by Edward Gorey, a mid-century writer and illustrator. Best-known for his work on children’s books, ‘The Curious Sofa’ is a deviation into adult themes. Without any actual nudity, the book successfully uses innuendo and strategically placed props, to create a narrative that is both frisky and somewhat dark; a “pornographic illustrated story about furniture”. Gorey is generally considered gothic in style, his pen-and-ink illustrations often depicting “vaguely ominous scenes in Edwardian or Victorian settings”, with creatures both fanciful and ghostly. This work is distinct within his oeuvre for its 1920s setting, with minimalist line-work, restriction of subjects (adults, furniture, props), and sexual theme. This copy is signed by Gorey as Ogdred Weary to the title page.

Very light wear to board edges. Dust Jacket is fully intact, no tears or chips, but carries signs of wear to edges and corners, presenting well in protective wraps. Near Fine Condition.
