The first UK edition of the first edition in English of the 1846 novella, La Mare au Diable, by French novelist Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin (1804 – 1876), best known by her pen name George Sand. This translation first published in 1847 in New York. Sand was known for her subversive novels, as well as for subverting societal gender roles in her life by way of cross-dressing and publicly divorcing. The novella features two strong women who refuse societal pressures to marry until they are ready.

Rebacked with new endpapers, the original spineback laid down. Very minor foxing and soiling. Very Good Condition.
