Full leather, recently rebacked, refurbished Cambridge panelled, raised bands, gilt lettering, blind decoration. “Place of publication conjectured by E on the basis of typography.” “Wing attributes to Edinburgh, but the typography is continental in appearance, as are the signatures of the preliminary leaves.” (ESTC R16833).

    Calderwood’s great work, The Historie of the Kirk of Scotland, funded by the General Assembly in 1648 after his return from exile in Holland. Unpublished at the time of his death there were three manuscript forms. This is the third and shortest of these manuscripts. “These histories have slight literary merit, but are invaluable as sources, their material having been collected with diligence and fidelity.” (Schaff-Herzog, 1908, pp. 341).

    A fine binding. Very minor marks and annotations in pencil. Some small closed tears and holes mostly to the bottom edge of some pages. Large closed tear to bottom edge of page 747/8. Chunk missing from corner of page 793/4, margin only. Very Good Condition.
