Friedrich Accum (1769-1838) was a German chemist who lived in London from 1793 to 1821. He played a key role in the establishment of gas lighting in London and wrote a number of popular chemistry works, most notably campaigning against the unscrupulous use of chemical additives in food in his 1820 A Treatise on Adulterations of Food and Culinary Poisons.
