Garry Shead and the Erotic Muse
29cm x 27cm. 204 pages, colour illustrations. Brown cloth, gilt lettering, illustrated jacket.
Garry Shead is one of Australia’s most acclaimed lyrical figurative painters, who has also worked with experimental film and cartoon. Dr. Grishin argues that within Shead’s stylistic diversity, there is a unifying thread, an “erotic impulse” associated with Erato the “erotic Muse”. This book covers Shead’s complete oeuvre over four decades, with excerpts from the artist’s diaries, correspondence, other unpublished documents and conversation with the artist and his peers. Shead was a friend of Brett Whitely and participated in the “Yellow House” activities of the early 1970s.
