Biography of American musician and artist Daniel Johnston. Johnston recorded most of his work on cassettes at home and in the 1980s developed a following after handing out his tapes while working at a McDonald’s in Austin, Texas. The purity and “childlike” qualities of his work saw him become an influential artist in lo-fi, outsider, and alternative music scenes. Johnston was also a visual artist, who exhibited illustrations in galleries around the world, and developed cult status when Kurt Cobain was seen wearing a T-shirt featuring his artwork.
