A Complete Treatise on the Causes and Effects of Impotence and Sterility in Man and Woman, and the Surest Ways to Cure It. French physician and writer Dr. Morel de Rubempre published extensively during the 1830s, garnering a reputation for writing about sex, temperament, and venereal diseases. While not professionally esteemed in his time, and occasionally the subject of derision for his writing and self-aggrandizement, Morel de Rubempre served to popularise medical knowledge on a variety of subjects. In his practice, he specialised in genito-urinary diseases and the treatment of syphilis; his focus on describing genital lesions helped shift conventional thinking about their causes, leading Morel to consider potency, rather than impotence, as the foundation for understanding impediments to his patient’s fertility. This rare work (only 2 copies recorded in OCLC) being in two volumes with continuous pagination bound as one, each with a separate title page and illustrated folding frontispiece. Undated, c. 1838.

Rebound in full beige leather, raised bands, and elegant gilt. Minor to moderate tanning and foxing, more prominent to preliminaries and last pages, title pages and verso of the plates. The plate rectos mostly clean, though the second volume moreso than the first. The imprint on the title page of volume 2 partially cropped. Very Good Condition.
