Mushrooms: History, description, culture, uses of edible, poisonous, suspicious species used in the arts, industry, home economics, medicine. Fourth Edition, Revised and Expanded. “The French mycologist and physician François Simon Cordier (1797-1874) published his first small book on fungi with 11 handcoloured lithographs in 1826 – a second edition followed in 1836. Many years later, at the age of 73, he presented a considerably enlarged version with chromolithographed plates by his daughter Aimee Delville-Cordier. (Cf. VOLBRACHT, Christian: Oft im Schatten der Manner – Frauen als Malerinnen von Pilzen. Ex Zeitschrift fur Mykologie 88 (2), 2022.) Many phrases of the edition of 1826 are repeated verbatim, but the earlier editions are not mentioned. In 1876, after Cordier’s death, the book was reissued with an new typography and pagination and called “fourth edition” on the title. It is not clear if this refers to the editions since 1826, or to different issues since 1870 (a “troisieme tirage” was distributed in 1874, cf. Stafleu).” VOLBRACHT 427.
