Still considered an important writer in America, Wolfe wrote this fictionalised account of his early life for his first novel. It caused a stir in his home town of Asheville, North Carolina, as its residents could recognise many local characters who had been only thinly disguised in the book. Despite his early death at the age of 37 he influenced writers like Jack Kerouac and Ray Bradbury.
