The 1850 reprint of Jones’ 1845 Illuminated Book of Common Prayer in a full leather binding likely based on a design by Jones. With notes and illustrations. Eight illuminated title pages, ornamental letters and borders, motifs and designs by Owen Jones, one of the nineteenth century’s pioneering architects and designers. Jones helped develop modern colour theory, new standards in chromolithography, and his design theories continue to influence designers today. This volume considered to be one of the finest examples of Jones’s work. Also includes thirty-seven illustrations drawn by George Scharf (after Giovanni de Fiesole, Raphael, Johann Friedrich Overbeck, Nicolas Poussin, Gustav Heinrich Naeke, Barthelemy della Porta, Fra Angelico, and Fra Bartolomeo) with engravings by Samuel Williams. Four full-page plates, for the Main Sacraments depicted in contemporary settings, by John C. Horsley and Henry Warren.
