First Thus.

20cm x 13cm. xvi, 232 pages. Illustrated papered boards.

One of Jane Austen’s seven Horrid Novels as listed in Northanger Abbey. Originally published in English in 1794 and here reprinted for the first time since the 18th century in a uniform Horrid Novels publisher’s papered boards with a cover illustration by Paul Rotha and an introduction by Montague Summers. Stated as translated from the German of Lawrence Flammenberg by Peter Teuthold, it is now widely attributed as an unfaithful translation by Teuthold of an anthology of legends about the Black Forest by Karl Friedrich Kahlert, Der Geisterbanner (1792) “For magniloquent descriptions of ‘horrid’ episodes, for sheer stylistic fervour in the handling of the supernatural, the work can rank high among its contemporaries” (Michael Sadlier)

Spine tanned. Some rubbing to board edges and with minor chipping to joints and spine tail. Minor tanning to interior. Good Condition.
