Charles Carrington clandestine reprint of a translation of Therese Philosophe, the notorious pornographic version of the Girard-Cadiere case first published ‘A la Haye’ [Paris c. 1748], attributed to Jean-Baptiste de Boyer, Marquis d’Argens. This copy bound in fine half leather, extra-illustrated with 5 plates from different sources and 1 original hand coloured pencil drawing. “About the commencement of the Eighteenth Century French society was upheaved by a most extraordinary scandal of an exceptionally painful nature. Father Girard, a Jesuit Priest, took advantage of the ascendancy he had obtained over one of his fair penitents, Mademoiselle Cadire, to assuage his ecclesiastical lusts on her virgin body, and there was no refinement of salacious enjoyment which this unscrupulous Monk did not revel in to the fullest.” MENDES 133. READE 3588. Rare, 1 copy recorded in OCLC, at University of Oxford as part of The Danson Erotica Collection at Trinity College.

Minor rubbing to leather at corners of lower board. Top edge short. Some edges roughly opened, small chips in places. Very Good Condition.
