Thomas Paine (1737-1809) was a British born philosopher, political theorist, and revolutionary. He went to America with the assistance of Benjamin Franklin and wrote pamphlets that encouraged the American War of Independence, later moving to France where he was involved in the French Revolution. His later turn to Deism and publication of pamphlets critical of his former friends, including George Washington, left him with few allies at the time of his death. 4 pages of advertisements bound in at front.
