    First Edition.

‘The Thousand Mile Stare’ was a photographic exhibition which opened in Melbourne in March 1988 and toured Australia through 1989. According to its curator, Joyce Agee, it aimed to highlight how the “geographic distinctiveness” of Australia brings to its photographic gaze a prophetic, radically distanced quality. Collected in this exhibit catalogue are works by fifty-four Australian photographers, alongside essays by Agee, Geoff Strong, Linda Hicks-Williams and others. It is at once a collector’s item and a window into a burgeoning Australian art form.
