William Carleton (1794-1869) was an Irish writer and novelist, best known for the many editions of his Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry. In this edition of 20 of the stories, while wishing to rehabilitate the reputation of the Irish and their culture, he manages to perpetuate the stereotypical Irishman.
