Paris [Vienna]: No publisher, 1910.First French-language edition of ‘Fleurettens Purpurschnecke’ (Vienna, 1905), the collection of eighteenth-century erotic verse illustrated by Franz von Bayros. Here the title page gives the verse as the work of Alexis Piron and credits the drawings to Venu de Bonestoc, a Bayros pseudonym. Privately printed under a false Paris imprint and not for public sale, with decorative borders to every page of text. One of 500 numbered copies on paper made for the edition, from a total of 530 (the first 30 on Japan paper). This copy rebound in a fine binding signed Wallis, with Bayros’ double-page illustration bound as the endpapers and a duplicate of text leaf 5 bound in. MONOD 1196.

One of 100 numbered copies on Japan paper, from a total edition of 200, the other 100 on two-colour chalk paper. This copy with the illustrations delicately hand-coloured; we have been unable to trace another coloured copy.

Produced at Clifford’s expense, it is the most lavish of Linnaeus’ works, containing an allegorical frontispiece by Jan Wandelaar and 36 botanical plates, 20 after drawings by Georg Dionysius Ehret.

They wear long shirts but no trousers, a few carry weapons – rifles and a sword – and most have a hat. One wears a spiked helmet, another what looks like a tin helmet. Posted in Rustersiel to Herr Hegemann in Aachen and postmarked 1911, it identifies them as members of the third sea battalion. The letter is mostly everyday notes, references going to China after Christmas.
