First published in 1750, being “the first book in English to describe how diamonds and pearls can be evaluated on the basis of the factors of size (or weight) and style of cut”. This edition, while stated as the Fourth Edition, is produced by the London bookseller Edward Lumley sometime in the 19th century, and differs from the fourth edition of 1871 “While resembling the 4th edition, it has been prepared by a different publisher and the contents are drastically re-arranged. The explanation of technical terms omitted in the previous edition (despite its claim to completeness!) is here restored.” SINKANKAS 3203. Though given the career of Lumley it is likely this edition was published prior to the 1871 fourth edition.

The complete work has been copied in the original German, though the poem starting ‘Keins wie dein feines ohr’ has only been titled with a blank space left for the poem, and the final 9 poems from ‘Ob schwerer nebel in den waldern hangt’ to end have not been included, presumably only because Briggs ran out of room in the book. Penned during Briggs time at 4BK Brisbane sometime in the late 1930s or early 1940s.

The album contains the bookplate of lawyer, politician, and Federalist, Sir Josiah Henry Symon (1846-1934). Ballarat: Richards & Co., No date.Photographic portrait of the Very Rev. Nathaniel Linden Parkyn (1851-1931), signed by him on the mount, “Your very affectionate friend, N. Lindon Parkyn”. Born in England, Parkyn was ordained in 1891 and served as curate in several English towns and villages before coming to Australia and serving as the second Dean of the Anglican Diocese of Ballarat from 1897-1914. He was remembered as an articulate speaker and a benevolent public figure to citizens of all denominations. He returned to England in 1914 where he served as vicar at Blackpool until 1821 before retiring to Bath where he died in 1931. An earlier portrait of Parkyn, taken before he came to Australia, is held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. This later portrait by Richards & Co. of Ballarat circa 1910. No photographic holdings of Dean Parkyn can be found in any Australian institution.
