Butch: The Male Thing! Vol. 1, Nos. 2 & 3
AU$400 Read MoreAdd to cartBill Munro
Sydney: Butch Enterprises, [1972].The second (of only two published) of one of Australia’s first gay porn magazines. It has been well documented that Munro’s publishing ventures were more for his own joy of sex than any great publishing profit aspirations, nonetheless, this final double-issue presents as a fine example of 1970s Australian erotica with its mix of male homoeroticism, cartoons, advertisements, and articles, as well as venue, book, and film reviews. Uncommon in the medium, Munro published his name prominently on the front cover, and the interior contains portraits of himself and staff, at a time when homosexuality was still criminalised throughout Australia. He later said he wanted Butch to have a “strong come out attitude [and show] that somebody wasn’t afraid to come out of the closet” (Munro: Let It All Hang Out, 2008). After Butch, Munro published a shortlived tabloid in 1973 titled Little Butch, before selling up to Bill Horne, heterosexual smut publisher of Ribald, who continued the publication as Gay. Printed by Sydney printers Rotaspeed Press, known for printing numerous Australian erotica works by Howard Products, Potz Press, and Lay Press, as well as student newspapers such as University of Queensland Union’s Semper Floreat.

Monster
AU$150 Read MoreAdd to cartRobin Morgan
Melbourne: Melbourne Radical Feminists, No date.American radical feminist Robin Morgan’s first book of poems, originally published by Random House in 1972. The title poem, ‘Monster’, quickly became one of the best-known poems of the women’s liberation movement, with the collection selling thirty thousand copies in its first six months. Its most controversial poem, ‘Arraignment’, accused Ted Hughes of complicity in Sylvia Plath’s death through his infidelity and alleged violence. Although Morgan revised the poem before publication, Hughes threatened legal action. Without informing Morgan, Random House agreed to withdraw the book from Commonwealth markets in return for Hughes dropping the matter. Feminist presses across the Commonwealth responded with unauthorised ‘pirate’ editions, most produced with Morgan’s blessing. The first appeared in Canada and followed shortly after by editions in Australia and New Zealand. Each varied in content: some carried graphics by women artists, others photographs of Plath, others, as here, both versions of ‘Arraignment’. This Australian edition includes illustrations and a bibliographical preface by Melbourne Radical Feminists.

Sydney: Scripts, 1973.“The nether world of women without men.” Australian reissue of the 1961 Midwood release. One of the many lesbian pulp novels produced in the mid to late 20th century. Often formulaic and issued in easily recognisable series with suggestive covers and titillating titles, the genre was written largely by male authors under female pseudonyms for a male readership, though a smaller number of authors, some of them lesbian or bisexual women writing under similar pseudonyms, brought more narrative sincerity and psychological depth to the same commercial format. The genre as a whole ranges from outright formulaic titillation to more literary treatments of lesbian relationships within the constraints of the paperback original.

Sandraman the Enemaman
AU$400 Read MoreAdd to cartF. Wakeling; M. Dreer; Sandra Anne
Erin: Sandraman Enterprises, No date.Illustrated erotic contact magazine devoted to enema fetishism and related watersports interests, issued during the 1970s from the same postal address as the fetishwear mail-order business Betty’s. Produced for a highly specialised readership, the publication combined illustrated fantasy narratives, correspondence, and contact-advertisement material centred on klismaphilia, the sexualisation of enemas and related practices. Although the fetish itself long predates its formal medical description, the term “klismaphilia” was coined in 1973 by psychiatrist Dr. Joanne Denko in a published case study examining patients for whom enemas functioned as a sexual preference. Earlier evidence of the practice appears in informal and clinical literature, including data gathered by sexologist Alfred Kinsey and colleagues in their 1953 survey of female sexual behaviour, which recorded enemas among a range of masturbatory techniques and erotic interests. Like many niche fetish publications of the period, Sandraman the Enemaman appears to have been distributed privately through mail-order networks rather than conventional bookselling channels. Survival rates are consequently low, reflecting both the ephemeral nature of the publication and the discretion of its readership. Unrecorded in OCLC.

La Femme Dominatas Issue 26
AU$400 Read MoreAdd to cartBenco Publications
New York: Benco Publications, 1974.Bi-monthly contact newsletter devoted to female domination and associated fetish interests. Typical of the underground personal-contact publications that flourished before the internet, it contains more than one hundred personal advertisements accompanied by suggestive line illustrations, together with advertisements for swingers’ clubs, mail-order fetishwear, specialist adult publications, humour features, and a serialised work of erotic fiction. The final page provides evidence of the publisher’s changing circumstances: the printed address at 152 West 42nd Street, Suite 536, New York, has been cancelled and overstamped with a corrected address for Benco at 130 West 42nd Street, Suite 1305, documenting at least one office relocation during the newsletter’s run. Such ephemeral publications were typically produced in small quantities for a niche readership and were rarely collected by libraries, contributing to their present scarcity. Unrecorded in OCLC.

London: The Olympia Press, 1971.First UK edition, retitled from ‘Soho Whore: The Making of a London Prostitute’ (New York: Olympia Press, [1967]). Published under the pseudonym Sheila Foster, presented as the memoir of a London sex worker, the book was in fact written by the Israeli author Michael Bernet, one of the writers associated with Maurice Girodias’ post-Paris Olympia Press ventures. The change of title presumably reflects the requirements of UK retail distribution, “Soho Whore” being rather more blunt than British high-street booksellers of the period were accustomed to displaying. Published during the brief final phase of Girodias’ operations under the Olympia Press imprint in London.

Sydney: Tim Johnson, 1972.A 1972 artist’s book by Sydney conceptual artist (now painter) Tim Johnson (1947-), containing 40 full page black and white street photographs which show the wind lifting the skirts of women on the streets of Sydney. Produced during his time as co-founder of one of Sydney’s first artist-run spaces, Inhibodress, alongside Mike Parr and Peter Kennedy, the work forms a key part of Johnson’s early-1970s investigations into public space, social conditioning, and eroticism. While the images might initially appear voyeuristic (see upskirt), they are best understood through the lens of his contemporaneous performances, Disclosure and Fittings. Those live works staged situations to expose and analyze unconscious “sexual mores” and “sex-role conditioning”, manipulating participants’ clothing in a gallery, provoking direct responses. Public Fitting explores similar themes through the “found performance” of the street, framing the wind as an unwitting collaborator and the women’s reactions as unscripted data on social behaviour. Published alongside a Super 8 film of the same name (featuring different images as compared with the film in the collection of the Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane), the film’s duration underscores the work’s non-erotic, analytical dimension. In contrast, the book’s static images are more readily misread as purely voyeuristic. This copy bears a later manuscript title on the spine, “Public Fitting – XXX”, a direct annotation of the work’s perceived erotic content, demonstrating the very social-sexual condition the artist sought to examine. Beyond this conceptual framework, the work also serves a vidid record of women’s fashion in early-1970s Sydney, an era dominated by the miniskirt. The edition size is unstated, though several sources, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, state that 200 copies were produced. This copy with an additional folded sheet containing 5 further small images of a woman’s underwear (perhaps from a different source), the artist’s stamp with his 54 Albermarle St address, and the contemporary signature Micheal [Mansell?] dated 17th/4/72.
