First UK edition, retitled from ‘Soho Whore: The Making of a London Prostitute’ (New York: Olympia Press, [1967]). Published under the pseudonym Sheila Foster, presented as the memoir of a London sex worker, the book was in fact written by the Israeli author Michael Bernet, one of the writers associated with Maurice Girodias’ post-Paris Olympia Press ventures. The change of title presumably reflects the requirements of UK retail distribution, “Soho Whore” being rather more blunt than British high-street booksellers of the period were accustomed to displaying. Published during the brief final phase of Girodias’ operations under the Olympia Press imprint in London.
