Haywards Heath: Sussex Mailbox, 1995.English fetish contact magazine, edited and published by a one-man operation “David” trading as Sussex Mailbox. Contains more than 200 detailed contact advertisements (the editor states his aim was to produce a higher-quality contact magazine than otherwise available in England at the time), interspersed with lengthy profiles of individual fetishists or their desires and minor fetish trade advertisements, a letters to the editor section, and a guide to advertising in a planned second issue. Laid in is a key to the codes used in the advertisements. The editorial reports that the publisher had been raided by police on 8 March [1995] in connection with the magazine. Several letters, dated April and May [1995], refer to the raid and offer sympathy. No second issue has been traced, and it is possible the police attention curtailed the title after a single number. London: Biba, 1968-2004.A complete set of the six Biba mail order catalogues (35.5cm x 18cm), four retaining their original Biba logo envelopes. Each catalogue was designed by John McConnell. Offered here together with: the Biba company newspaper ‘Welcome to the New Biba’ [London, 1973], produced to mark the opening of the Big Biba department store in Kensington; a Biba Food Hall paper bag; a Biba plastic carry bag; the exhibition catalogue ‘Biba: The Label, The Lifestyle, The Look’ (Leicester Museum and Art Gallery, 1993); and ‘In Biba: A Graphic Romance’ by Delisia Howard, illustrated by Chris Price, with foreword and additional illustrations by Barbara Hulanicki (London: Hazard Books, 2004). Biba was founded by Barbara Hulanicki and Stephen Fitz-Simon in 1964 as a mail-order fashion label, becoming one of the defining names of London’s Swinging Sixties and early 1970s style. Rejecting conventional catalogue photography, the mail-order catalogues were conceived as fashion editorials, featuring original work by Donald Silverstein, Hans Feurer, Helmut Newton, Sarah Moon, and Harri Peccinotti. Combining innovative graphic design with editorial fashion photography, they rank among the landmarks of late-1960s British fashion publishing.

North Yorkshire: DoodleBug, 1987-88.The first five issues (of eight) of a self-published comic created in North Yorkshire by cartoonist Royston Robertson (b. 1968) with a group of sixth-form friends, in imitation of the recently-successful Viz. Each issue was printed in a run of 1,000 copies and distributed by the group themselves to local shops and pubs. The comic was reviewed in Record Mirror and championed on BBC Radio One by John Peel. Ending after eight issues when Roberston went onto university; he later worked as a journalist and sub-editor at The Times, before becoming a full-time cartoonist in 2004 contributing to Private Eye, The Spectator, and other periodicals. “Hundreds of zany japes about things such as Australians, baseball, beards, bears, beasties, birds, boredom, cartoonists, cliches, cockneys, doors, drugs, eggs, fish, game-shows, Geordies, graffiti, hangovers, Hitler, hooliganism, ignorance, Max Headroom, money, mops, murder, necks, nonsense, noses, nuclear waste, pearls, Picasso, prisons, punctuality, quadrangles, sado-masochism, sex, sex, spiders, spontaneous combustion, suicide, toe nails, tortoises, the obvious, werewolves and yuppies!” (from the cover of No. 1) Unrecorded in OCLC.

Illustrated throughout with photographs of the factory, machinery, and staff at work, with eight colour plates of the company’s cotton simplex and rayon gloves. A single copy recorded in OCLC, at the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives. This copy with a lengthy presentation inscription from Leslie Pinkham to John Bayliss, a production manager at the Australian lingerie manufacturer Berlei, recalling their meeting and a day trip to Wollongong in July 1948.

Published under the pseudonym Sheila Foster, presented as the memoir of a London sex worker, the book was in fact written by the Israeli author Michael Bernet, one of the writers associated with Maurice Girodias’ post-Paris Olympia Press ventures. The change of title presumably reflects the requirements of UK retail distribution, “Soho Whore” being rather more blunt than British high-street booksellers of the period were accustomed to displaying. Published during the brief final phase of Girodias’ operations under the Olympia Press imprint in London.

New York: Brentano’s, 1888.First published in 1886 under the pseudonym Thorold King, a novel of narcotic experience following a young Englishman who travels to Egypt, becomes addicted to hashish, and experiences vivid hallucinations. Gatchell was known for his interest in and personal experimentation with cannabis indica extract. In an 1889 letter (sold at auction by Alex Autographs, 2012), he provided detailed instructions on smoking the resinous extract, stating that in his book “there are many facts and many actual experiences” and that it was “possible for you to repeat everything there described.” This copy, probably the author’s own, with a manuscript note on the title page reading: “Published originally by A. C. McClurg, who sold 3 editions. Then I turned it over to Brentano’s who published and sold 3 more editions. C.” Various advertisements and promotional materials for the book are glued to the pastedowns and endpapers. Among the relatively few 19th-century novels to treat cannabis, marijuana, and hashish in a broadly positive or experiential light.
