Friedrich Accum (1769-1838) was a German chemist who lived in London from 1793 to 1821. He played a key role in the establishment of gas lighting in London and wrote a number of popular chemistry works, most notably campaigning against the unscrupulous use of chemical additives in food in his 1820 A Treatise on Adulterations of Food and Culinary Poisons. From the encyclopedic series of works on mechanical technology and engineering, Theatrum Machinarum, by German physicist, mathematician, and engineer Jacob Leupold (1674-1727). [A clear instruction on how one can not only cross ditches, streams and rivers in various ways, but also save one’s life in times of water with certain machines and special clothing. Furthermore, according to all circumstances and coincidences, convenient and durable bridges, both wooden ones with yokes or stone posts, and without them with rigging and blasting works, as well as entirely of stone, according to art, to build advantageously and permanently. Then also how many examples of sailing, flying, storm-field and similar bridges can be given. All with many examples and the most distinguished makers in and outside Germany, but especially with a complete description of their pontoons, presented and explained in 60 copper plates.] The first 4 plates show a variety of methods for crossing bodies of water including an array of unusual diving and floating devices, the rest devoted to the architecture and engineering of bridges.

No place: No publisher, [1730].A relic of the Utrecht sodomy trials, the large scale persecution of homosexual men in the Netherlands starting in 1730. Without author or publisher, literally the title translated to [All the copies of summonses, as well as all the poems applicable to the present time], listing of men accused of sodomy, with charges and sentences, many of death, accompanied by long moralistic poems on the depravity of the crime. 2 parts in one, the second part, Vervolg op alle de Copyen, being a continuation. This copy with the second part ending at page 94 with the final charge in October of 1730 and ending with the poem by P. Schim. Copies of various sizes are noted of part 2, perhaps indicating different issues, from page 94 to 151 the list continues to 1731, perhaps being issued later.

From the much expanded second edition it became widely used and was a major inspiration for Ephraim Chamber’s 1728 Cyclopaedia and the 1751-72 Encyclopedie, ou dictionnaire raisonne des sciences, des arts et des metiers.

The album contains the bookplate of lawyer, politician, and Federalist, Sir Josiah Henry Symon (1846-1934). Published in 3 volumes in 1919, 1921, and 1923, it is the largest historical work on Queensland and its colonial settler families ever produced. Despite known colloquially as Fox’s History of Queensland, and with the second and third volumes crediting him as the compiler, the first volume was edited by Phillip Champion de Crespigny and Ernest Sando Emerson, the second by Andrew Grant, and the third by G. G. Swann, together with countless unnamed writers and with contributions from various photographers. Rare as a complete set and with the original leather almost always worn and cracked, this set rebacked preserving the original boards and spinebacks.
