Sunshine and Rainbows: The Development of Gay and Lesbian Culture in Queensland
AU$60 Read MoreAdd to cartClive Moore
Brisbane: University of Queensland Press, 2001.“a history of the development of homosexuality as an Australian subculture. Proceeding chronologically from the 1820s through to the vibrant alternative culture that exists in 2000, Sunshine and Rainbows argues that the manner in which gay and lesbian identity has been constructed in Queensland is typical of Australia generally. Beginning with isolated acts suppressed by criminal law and medical opnion, a homosexual identity developed, which by the mid-nineteenth century was based on male appropriation of public space. A clandestine social subculture was in place during the first half of the twentieth century. Despite continued religious, social, legal and medical repression, it became an obvious part of Australian sexuality, expressed through Beats and early gathering places such as coffee shops, hotels and theatres. Well developed in urban areas by the 1930s and 1940s, the subculture strengthened in the 1970s and 1980s, when clubs, gay commercial venues and political organisations emerged. The fight for gay law reform, recognition of the rights of same-sex partners, and of individuals affected by HIV/AIDS continues today. Sunshine and Rainbows discusses the different roles of gay men and lesbians in the subculture, arguing that by the end of the twentieth century a transition had occurred to a full-development alternative culture.” (from rear cover)

Fallopian Tube Fallopianna & Madness (2 Volumes)
AU$400 Read MoreAdd to cartGaby [Gabrielle Antolovich]
Sydney: Fallopian Tube Press, 1974.The first two (and likely only) publications of the Sydney lesbian feminist press Fallopian Tube, featuring feminist and lesbian poetry and texts. Gabrielle Antolovich was a prominent figure in Sydney’s gay liberation and feminist movements, an early member of the Campaign Against Moral Persecution (CAMP) who, with her then-partner Sue Wills, appeared on the ABC’s landmark Chequerboard documentary in 1972 as one of the first openly lesbian couples on Australian television. Antolovich resigned from CAMP’s executive in 1974, citing sexism within the organisation, the same year these publications appeared, amid a broader shift among lesbian activists toward autonomous feminist publishing. Fallopianna is one of 100 numbered first printing copies produced in April 1974. Madness is one of 200 numbered first printing copies produced in December of the same year. Contains an erotic text by pioneering Australian feminist artist Vivienne Binns, noted as ‘the piece that no other publication would print’, along with contributions by Kerryn Higgs, Kate Jennings, and others.

A History of LGBTIQ+ Victoria in 100 Places and Objects
AU$50 Read MoreAdd to cartGraham Willett; Angela Bailey; Timothy W. Jones; Sarah Rood
Melbourne: Australian Queer Archives and Heritage Victoria, 2021.“A History of LGBTIQ+ Victoria in 100 Places and Objects was commissioned by Heritage Victoria to highlight the rich, diverse and unique history of queer communities in Victoria and to demonstrate how these communities are reflected in the places, objects and landscapes that surround us. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, asexual, sistergirl and brotherboy (LGBTIQ+) people are, and always have been, an integral part of Victorian social, political and cultural life. However, the experiences and voices of queer communities have not commonly been included in the historical record and, consequently, queer heritage has remained largely invisible. This report identifies 100 places, objects and collections that have specific and unique meaning to Victorias contemporary queer communities. Identifying and exploring the meaning of these places, objects and collections to members of the LGBTIQ+ communities who have suggested them adds depth and richness to Victorias history and heritage. It also makes visible the stories and experiences of communities that have, until recently, been ignored and at times actively persecuted.” (publisher’s blurb)

LGBTQ Social Movements
AU$35 Read MoreAdd to cartLisa M. Stulberg
Cambridge: Polity, 2018.“In recent years, there has been substantial progress on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights in the United States. We are now, though, in a time of incredible political uncertainty for queer people. LGBTQ Social Movements provides an accessible introduction to mainstream LGBTQ movements in the US, illustrating the many forms that LGBTQ activism has taken since the mid-twentieth century. Covering a range of topics, including the Stonewall uprising and gay liberation, AIDS politics, queer activism, marriage equality fights, youth action, and bisexual and transgender justice, Lisa M. Stulberg explores how marginalized people and communities have used a wide range of political and cultural tools to demand and create change. The five key themes that guide the book are assimilationism and liberationism as complex strategies for equality, the limits and possibilities of legal change, the role of art and popular culture in social change, the interconnectedness of social movements, and the role of privilege in movement organizing. This book is an important tool for understanding current LGBTQ politics and will be essential reading for students and scholars of sexuality, LGBTQ studies, and social movements, as well as anyone new to thinking about these issues.
