Seven consecutive annual reports of the Queensland Protector of Aborigines, running from Walter Roth’s last year as Northern Protector of Aboriginals through his term as Chief Protector and into the first years of his successor, Richard Baron Howard. The 1903 report is the last of the divided system, under which Roth administered the north and Archibald Meston the south; the protectorate of Queensland was reorganised under a single Chief Protector in 1904, with Roth appointed. Walter Edmund Roth (1861-1933) was a physician, anthropologist, and the first Northern Protector of Aboriginals. As an administrator Roth worked tirelessly for the betterment of Aboriginal rights against colonial and political forces, though controversy, including “payment” to take photographs of sexual positions for anthropological reasons, hounded him to resignation.
