42cm x 29cm. Original drawing, pencil and watercolour. Together with 1 original drawing, ink and pencil, 20cm x 15cm.
Original portrait of Fred Stolle in pencil and watercolour by the Czech artist and caricaturist Marcel Niederle (1898-1990), made in 1967, Stolle’s first year as a professional after winning the French Championships in 1965 and the US Championships in 1966. Offered with a smaller caricature of Stolle by Niederle in ink and pencil, dated 1969, depicting Stolle with a racket in one hand and a large sack of money over his shoulder, likely a comment on the advent of the Open Era. Niederle specialised in sporting subjects, particularly tennis and ice hockey. After working in New York as an illustrator for Sports Illustrated he returned to Czechoslovakia, where he drew the leading tennis players of the 1950s to the 1970s, a period dominated by Australian champions. No holdings of Niederle’s work can be traced in any Australian public collection.
Very minor wear to edges. Near Fine Condition.
