Where Bees Dare
AU$600 Read MoreAdd to cartChristine Annisette Hypoteneuse Webblea [Christine Webb]
[Mountain View]: [Christine Webb], No date.Unpublished illustrated prose work centred on gardens and herbalism, with autobiographical reminiscences. Webb recounts her early years as a hippie in Melbourne, a period teaching in the city’s western suburbs, subsequent travels, and her return to a changed Melbourne, where she became immersed in the bohemian circles of Fitzroy and Carlton. The narrative concludes with a fictionalised account of her first meeting with Shelton Lea, which concludes with “let’s get out of the city”. A photocopied draft of text and illustrations in the style of the collaborative works produced by Webb and Lea during their prolific period of the mid to late 1980s from that “out of the city” cottage at Mountain View. Page 9 bears an additional paragraph in Webb’s autograph. Probably dating from around late 1985/early 1986, on the evidence of a letter addressed to Webb on 17 May 1986 referring to a rumour that she had “ditched” her gardening book, but credits her with having redeemed herself by delivering “a healthy, robust comic-book” into the world, quite likely ‘Outrageous Adventures of Tulips in Whatta Piss-off!!’, which appears from the letter already to have been completed and circulating.
