Nomen / Noh Masks

Kyoto: Shinshindo, 1979.A beautifully presented collection of masks used in the classical Japanese dance-drama Noh. Each plate, photographed by Naomi Maki, is mounted in an individual folder with tissue guard, housed in a portfolio case, and includes an index sheet. An accompanying explanatory volume written by Yasuo Nakamura goes into detail on the subject, as well as containing black and white photographs of the reverse sides of the masks. The portfolio and accompanying volume are housed inside of another cloth clamshell with two bone clasps, which in turn is housed in another box. Yasuo Nakamura (1919-1996) was a Japanese high school teacher, junior college professor, and Noh scholar, producing numerous works on the subject from the 1960s until his death. His scholarship on this collection of masks earned him the Geijutsu Sensho Prize from The Agency for Cultural Affairs.

Crimean Campaigning and Russian Imprisonment

Thomson, 1889.A unique association copy of this rare account of one of the most famous battles in British military history from the point of view of a non commanding officer together with his experiences in Russian captivity and his eventual release. Robert Stuart Farquharson (1832-1892) provides a highly detailed account of his participation in the famous Charge of the Light Brigade, October 25th, 1854, at the Battle of Balaclava, during the Crimean War, and his subsequent capture and imprisonment by the Russians. This copy inscribed on the front flyleaf to the author’s sister (Marion Farquharson) together with 3 pieces of ephemera: 1. The author’s ticket to the dinner commemorating the thirtieth anniversary of the Charge to be held at the Aquarium Westminster on Saturday the 25th October, 1884; 2. A newspaper cutting dated May 18th, 1892, mounted on card bearing the emblem of the East Lothian & Berwickshire Yeomanry Cavalry and with several date annotations in another hand and also bearing Farquharson’s signature, the clipping giving details of a testimonial dinner for Farquharson at The Royal Hotel upon his retirement from the bandmastership of the Lothians and Berwickshire Cavalry; 3. A flyer with press reviews of the book. An earlier edition was private printed for the author by Thomas Allan in 1883. This is the first trade edition with no other printings to date.

This copy with various owner names of the Chorley family, one Alexander Chorley dated 1773, also John and Sarah, as well as James McDonald, and with their marginalia throughout.

First published and edited by John Murray in 1909, this lot come under the fourth ownership and the fourth branding (back to the original title Boxing, after briefly going by Boxing and Racing, then Boxing, Racing and Football during the late 1920s/early 1930s), just prior to and during the early days of World War II, and under the editorial direction of Sidney Ackland, then Stanley Nelson, and briefly with John Murray returning to the helm. Discusses bouts in England and abroad, with regular published sections on the sport in America, Australia, and elsewhere, as well as fights held within the armed services. Published every Wednesday and available for threepence. Despite wide circulation and countless issues, with their tabloid format, wartime quality paper, and the office being destroyed in an air raid in 1941, these earlier issues are rare, and as of December, 2021, only held at The British Library, with 3 other institutions having partial holdings, all in either the US or UK. An invitation to the opening celebrations of the extensions to the Murat Temple of the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine in the Oasis of Indianapolis, Desert of Indiana. A great ballroom, it was decorated with an Egyptian theme to match the Arabic concept of the Shrine, with hieroglyphics and drawings found in ancient palaces and tombs near Thebes. Shriners membership form laid in, and housed in an original unmarked posting envelope. Unrecorded in OCLC at October, 2022.
