The Allure of Fungi
AU$50.00 Read MoreAdd to cartAlison Pouliot
Melbourne: CSIRO Publishing, 2022.“Although relatively little known, fungi provide the links between the various organisms and ecosystems that underpin our functioning planet. The Allure of Fungi presents fungi through multiple perspectives those of mycologists and ecologists, foragers and forayers, naturalists and farmers, aesthetes and artists, philosophers and Traditional Owners. It explores how a history of entrenched fears and misconceptions about fungi has led to their near absence in Australian ecological consciousness and biodiversity conservation. Through the combination of engaging text and stunning photography, the author reflects on how aesthetic, sensate experience deepened by scientific knowledge offers the best chance for understanding fungi, the forest and human interactions with them.”

Allies for Awakening: Guidelines for Productive and Safe Experiences with Entheogens
AU$30.00 Read MoreAdd to cartRalph Metzner
El Verano: Four Trees Press, 2022.“This monograph is based on 50 years of experience as a participant-observer in the international underground sub-culture involved with entheogenic, consciousness-expanding substances. The author discusses the uses and values of such substances when the explicit intention or purpose is for spiritual awakening, psychotherapy, healing, increased understanding and the enhancement of creativity. The intent of this documentation is not to prove or promote any particular method or treatment of any condition. The evaluation of entheogens needs to be in terms of how productive these experiences are of healthier approaches to the issues of living in these times, in this world.” (publisher’s blurb)

The Drug Users Bible: Harm Reduction, Risk Mitigation, Personal Safety: An Antidote to the War on Drugs
AU$50.00 Read MoreAdd to cartDominic Milton Trott
: MxZero Publishing, 2022.The complete and final version of the Drug Users Bible. People are dying because of ignorance. They are dying because unremitting propaganda is denying them vital safety information. They are dying because legislators and the media are censoring the science, and are ruthlessly pushing an ideological agenda instead. They are dying because the first casualty of war is truth, and the war on drugs is no different. This book makes a significant contribution in confronting this harrowing and tragic narrative. Over a 12 year period the author of this book self-administered over 180 psychoactive substances; both chemicals and plants. For each he recorded the life-sensitive safety data, including the anticipated onset times, the common threshold doses, the routes of administration, and the expected duration of the experience. In addition, for every compound he also produced a trip report, detailing the qualitative experience itself. This delivered another invaluable insight, enabling, for example, an objective assessment of the extent of any loss of judgement and self-control. This is a substantial body of work, embracing a wealth of direct support material, including addiction/overdose advice, relative harm tables, and legal briefings. Its contents also extend to cover aspects such as drug tourism, psychedelic exploration and drug related culture. It is crammed with detailed reference data, and even includes its own drug dictionary.” (publisher’s blurb)

Awakening a Curate’s Library: The Rev. William Arderne Shoults (1839-1887): His Life, His Book Collection, and his Legacy to New Zealand
AU$65.00 Read MoreAdd to cartDonald Jackson Kerr
: The Bibliographical Society of Australia and New Zealand, 2022.“This book is the first to provide an account of the life of Rev. William Arderne Shoults (1839-1887) and his book collecting. It is also the first detailed examination of a true survivor, his book collection of some 5600 items, including medieval manuscripts, incunables, books on ecclesiastical history and primitive church rites and rituals, philology, bibliography, science, travel, and Arabic and Persian texts. The contents cover Shoults’s early years at St. John’s College, Cambridge University, his work in some of the poorer ritualistic parishes of London, his association with the Rev. Joseph Leycester Lyne (1837-1908), the controversial, enthusiastic, revivalist known as ‘Father Ignatius’, his work on Latin hymns, his marriage, and his travel overseas, which included visiting the Vatican Library. After Shoults’s death at 48, his collection was gifted to Selwyn College, Dunedin, arriving in New Zealand in 1893. The survival of this collection is remarkable and it exists as a fine example of what a nineteenth-century curate could collect.” (publisher’s blurb)

Pleasure Erased: The Clitoris Unthought
AU$20.00 Read MoreAdd to cartCatherine Malabou
Cambridge: Polity, 2022.“The clitoris was absent in anatomy books, in paintings and sculptures, absent in spirit and even body; it has long been the organ of erased pleasure. We assume that this oversight has been repaired in our times: today, the clitoris is not forgotten but honoured. Conferences, books, manifestos, works of art are all devoted to it. The autonomy of clitoral jouissance is recognized. The boundaries of feminism have also moved: queer, intersex and trans approaches claim that the clitoris is perhaps no longer the exclusive preserve of the woman. And yet, there remains a wounded space. Because genital mutilation is still common practice. Because millions of women are still denied pleasure. The clitoris continues to mark the enigmatic space of the feminine. Constrained by the extreme difficulty and the extreme urgency of returning to this scorched earth, it is time to give voice to an organ of pleasure which has still not become an organ of thought.” (publisher’s blurb) Translated from the French by Carolyn Shread.

The Myth of the Wrong Body
AU$25.00 Read MoreAdd to cartMiquel Misse
Cambridge: Polity, 2022.“The most popular narrative about transsexuality suggests that some people are born in the wrong body — that their bodies do not correspond to their inner experience and that their bodies should therefore be transformed. But in the view of the sociologist and trans activist Miguel Misse, this narrative is a harmful myth. It is rooted in a medical paradigm that typically leads to medical intervention to the use of hormones and surgical operations. By proposing a particular solution (modifying ones body), doctors and psychiatrists make it difficult for trans people to overcome malaise about their body in other ways and prevent them from recognizing the burden of social norms. Drawing on his own personal experience, Misse makes the case for a different way of thinking about trans embodiment which focuses on gender identity. The trajectory that leads people to become trans is shaped by the rigidity of gender norms, where the only two models available to individuals are the masculine man and the feminine woman. But these are not the only possible choices, and by critically interrogating the rigidity of gender norms, Misse opens up a different way of thinking about being trans, beyond the essentialism of the medical paradigm.” (publisher’s blurb) Translated from Spanish by Frances Riddle.

Koln: Taschen, 2022.“The new publishing companies started in Hollywood then expanded into the San Fernando Valley, the first settlers in what would become the world capitol of porn production. American Art Agency, commonly called Parliament, was the leader, but Art Enterprises, Comet, Dominion, Marquis, Marst, Orbit, Pendulum, Press Arts, Rilgac, Sari, Spice, Tri-S, Tower, Utopia and many others contributed memorable magazines. The East Coast got into the game late with Sampson and Delilah Publishing, Health Knowledge, and Lenny Burtman’s Selbee Associates out of New York, and the distinctive Tudor House/Central Sales from Baltimore, but overall, California ruled.” (from introduction)

Koln: Taschen, 2022.“Around 1960 Hugh Hefner began exporting Playboy. It was an immediate success overseas and by mid-decade most of Europe had adopted the Playboy blueprint for its own men’s magazines. From France came Lui, from Italy Playmen. England made King, Germany Eden. The only serious challenge to Playboy’s dominance came when Penthouse from newly hip London in 1965, taking the grittier stance of the Rolling Stones to Playboy’s Beatles. From 1966 on Penthouse was copied regularly as Playboy, resulting in English Mayfair and Men Only and Italian Excelsior, Men, 10 and numerous others. Italy was especially taken with the Penthouse model, since publisher Bob Guccione was a paisano himself, but even Germany’s most venerable men’s magazine, Er, eventually restyled in Penthouse hipster mode. Soon these “lifestyle” men’s magazines, those that covered fashion, food, travel and entertainment as well as sex, were the only titles available on European newsstands. Playboy’s overseas influence was a stunning victory for Hefner, but it came at the expense of the more culturally distinctive magazines made in France, Germany and England prior to 1960.” (from introduction)
