Hilma af Klint: The Complete Catalogue Raisonne (7 Volumes)
Hilma af Klint; Daniel Birnbaum; Kurt Almqvist
Stockholm: Bokforlaget Stolpe, 2022.“Hilma af Klint became known to a wider audience in 2013, nearly 70 years after her death, in conjunction with Moderna Museet’s Stockholm exhibition Hilma af Klint: Abstract Pioneer. Six years later, her work was exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Both exhibitions saw record numbers of visitors, and today she is one of the world’s most acclaimed artists. The paintings in the catalogue raisonne are presented in the same order as Olof Sundstrom, also a follower of anthroposophy, numbered them in 1945, based on Hilma af Klint’s notes. The forewords to the volumes are short and concise. They present facts about the works rather than interpretations. The works are printed in an exclusive edition designed by Patric Leo housed in a specially produced slipcase to hold all seven volumes.” (publisher’s blurb) Edited by Daniel Birnbaum and Kurt Almqvist.

Psyche Unbound: Essays in Honor of Stanislav Grof
Richard Tarnas; Sean Kelly
[Santa Fe]: Multipdisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies, 2022.“Psyche Unbound is an extraordinary compilation of twenty-two essays that honor the pathbreaking lifework of Stanislav Grof, the world’s leading researcher in psychedelic therapy, breathwork, and the exploration of non-ordinary states of consciousness. Over the past half century, Grof has conducted thousands of LSD-assisted psychotherapy sessions, developed unique frameworks for supporting and understanding mental health, and ultimately created a new, expansive cartography of the mind that welcomes spiritual experience with openness, rigor, and reverence. In honor of Grof’s 90th birthday, this seminal collection of essays ranges from Joseph Campbell’s and Huston Smith’s remarkable assessments in the early 1970s as they first encountered and recognized the significance of Grof’s discoveries, to current reflections by psychiatrists and researchers participating in today’s renaissance of psychedelic therapy. In between are major essays that forward Grof’s work on numerous theoretical and therapeutic fronts: implications for social and cultural change, transpersonal sexual experiences, the perinatal dimensions of Jean-Paul Sartre’s 1935 mescaline experience, comparative studies with Asian religious systems, and illuminating parallels with the philosophical views of Alfred North Whitehead and William James, as well as discoveries in quantum and relativistic physics. Edited by Richard Tarnas and Sean Kelly, Psyche Unbound is an homage to one of the greatest clinicians in history and his powerful legacy of healing the soul and evolving human consciousness.” (publisher’s blurb)

Fugitive Text
Peter Maloney
Melbourne: M.33, 2022.“Fugitive Text draws together photographic diptychs and triptychs made since the mid-1990s in response to the artist’s experience of love, desire and loss through the HIV/AIDS pandemic. It incorporates photographs taken in-camera as well as images drawn from a variety of sources, including vintage photographs found in flea markets and images re-photographed from pornography and popular culture. The photographs views of architectural and public spaces, flowers, nudes, images of sea and sky are paired and, in most cases, overpainted with text anecdotes, fragments drawn from memory, popular verse and queer culture. The images draw on Peter Maloneys experience of the HIV/AIDS pandemic (as an HIV-positive person who lost much of their social group during the 1980s and early 1990s) and on photographys specific relationship to memory, time and place, and testimony. Combined with scraps of text, the images become memory fragments. The memories suggested by these works are those of someone remembering love and loss friends and lovers lost to HIV/AIDS, and also the moments of desire, risk and sensation that in a way mark the queer experience of time and space. The book, with its exposed spine and multiple fold out triptychs, was designed by Elliott Bryce Foulkes and is in itself an object of exceptional beauty. The works are accompanied by texts by the prominent American author and cultural critic Lynne Tillman and writer and curator Shaune Lakin.” (publisher’s blurb)

Paradise Camp
Yuki Kihara; Natalie King
Wellington and Melbourne: Creative New Zealand and Thames & Hudson, 2022.“Interdisciplinary artist Yuki Kihara’s work interrogates and dismantles gender roles, (mis)representation, and colonial legacies in the Pacific. Kihara is the first Pasifika and first Fa’afafine artist to be presented by New Zealand at the prestigious 59th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, with a groundbreaking exhibition of new work that addresses some of the most pressing issues of our time. For this companion publication to the exhibition, editor Natalie King has commissioned contributors from around the world to explore the interwoven strands running through Kihara’s art: race, gender, place, decolonisation, environment, agency, community. The book contextualises Kihara’s lifetime of works, which camp, expose, queer and question dominant narratives, turning so-called history on its head. The book contains contributions from Tahiti to Aotearoa. Brian G. Rough
Brisbane: Brian Rough, 2022.“Photographers have made a significant contribution towards our understanding and interpretation of the Citys past by recording the people and places around them. Capturing Brisbane provides the stories of 158 commercial photographers and 54 photographic studios operating in the City between 1855 and 1901. By accurately identifying the people who created the images, and from when and where they were operating, it provides a very useful tool to assist in dating Brisbane photographs.” (publisher’s blurb)

The Future is Fungi
Michael Lim; Yun Shu
London: Thames & Hudson, 2022.How Fungi Can Feed Us, Heal Us, Free Us and Save Our World. “The kingdom of fungi has survived all five major extinction events. They are the architects of the natural world, integral to all life. They sustain critical ecosystems, recycling nutrients and connecting plants across vast areas, and help to produce many staples of modern life, such as wine, chocolate, bread, detergent and penicillin. Today, in the face of urgent ecological, societal and spiritual crises, fungi are being engineered to grow meat alternatives, create new sources of medicine, produce sustainable biomaterials, remediate the environment and even expand our collective consciousness. The Future is Fungi is a complete introduction to this hidden kingdom. Exploring their past, present and potential future impact in four key areas – food, medicine, psychedelics and mental health, and environmental remediation – this book not only reveals how fungi have formed the foundations of modern life but how they might help shape our future. Rich with informative texts, awe-inspiring 3D digital art and tips on how to immerse yourself in the world of fungi, this is a manifesto for the future, an invitation into a deeper awareness of our relationship with the natural world, each other, and ourselves.” (publisher’s blurb)
