Garbage Man
Tal R
[Zurich]: Nieves and innen, 2021.“Garbage Man — could refer to Tal R himself as manic collector of what other people would perhaps refer to as refuse. Collecting and arranging of images is an integral component of his artistic practice and arises in its own manifestation from an inner necessity. The Yiddish word Kolbojnik (Waste, Remains) also runs through the work of the artist within the titling of many of his works. His collection, which can be found within the individual collages, consists of an eclectic mix of primitive tribal art, art history masterpieces, pornos, comics, private photos, childhood pictures, sketches and picture book illustrations, and was collected by Tal R over a period of 25 years. The works evoke in their pseudo-encyclopaedic phenomenon associations, Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne Atlas, or, to refer to another artist, the Atlas by Gerhard Richter. Similar to him, the arranged pieces within the collages from Garbage Man served and serve the artist also as templates for paintings and sculptures.” (publisher’s blurb)

Wild Mushrooming: A Guide for Foragers
Alison Pouliot; Tom May
Melbourne: CSIRO Publishing, 2021.“Fungi are diverse, delicious and sometimes deadly. With interest in foraging for wild food on the rise, learning to accurately identify fungi reduces both poisoning risk to humans and harm to the environment. This extensively illustrated guide takes a ‘slow mushrooming’ approach — providing the information to correctly identify a few edible species thoroughly, rather than many superficially. Wild Mushrooming: A Guide for Foragers melds scientific and cultural knowledge with stunning photography to present a new way of looking at fungi.” (publisher’s blurb)

Picturing a Nation: The Art & Life of A. H. Fullwood
Gary Werskey; A. H. Fullwood
Sydney: NewSouth Publishing, 2021.“The untold story of a major Australian artist. Regarded in his day as an important Australian impressionist painter, A.H. Fullwood (1863-1930) was also the most widely viewed British-Australian artist of the Heidelberg era. Fullwood’s illustrations for the popular Picturesque Atlas of Australasia and the Bulletin, as well as leading Australian and English newspapers, helped shape how settler-colonial Australia was seen both here and around the world. Meanwhile his paintings were as celebrated as those of his good friends Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton. So why is Fullwood so little known today? In this pioneering, richly illustrated biography, Gary Werskey brings Fullwood and his extraordinary career as an illustrator, painter, and war artist back to life, while casting a new light on the most fabled era in the history of Australian art.” (publisher’s blurb)

Beating the Benzo Blues
Dale Carruth
[Australia]: Dale Carruth, 2021.“This book is an easy to follow, three-step guide, to help you safely detox off benzodiazepines with minimal stress and disruption to your daily life. It will first will help you identify whether benzodiazepine addiction is present and then how to slowly detox off them. It is aimed at both individuals and health practitioners. Benzodiazepines were introduced in the 50s, and falsely marketed as virtually non-addictive drugs for psychic tension. Time has proven otherwise and these drugs, are now known to be highly addictive and responsible for perhaps, one of the worst medical blunders in history. Many people taking benzos, usually prescribed for sleep or anxiety, may be unaware they’re even addicted and consequently might attribute their withdrawal symptoms to something else entirely. Dale Carruth is an addiction counsellor and educator. This book is a result of many years of clinical practise, research and observation in both private practise and working for Tranx Services, New Zealand, a counselling and detoxification service, dedicated to prescription medication addiction.” (publisher’s blurb)
