The Northern Tribes of Central Australia (Walter Roth’s Copy)
AU$2,500 Read MoreAdd to cartBaldwin Spencer; F. J. Gillen
London: Macmillan and Co., 1904.Spencer and Gillen’s expeditions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries marked the beginning of modern anthropological fieldwork in Australia. They amassed an enormous collection of notebooks, films, audio recordings, illustrations, and photographs, which are well represented throughout. An important association copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper by Spencer on behalf of both authors to Walter Edmund Roth (1861-1933). The year of publication was the year Roth became Queensland’s Chief Protector of Aboriginals, and the same year his Western Australian royal commission report documented abuses of Aboriginal people in the North-West. As an administrator Roth worked tirelessly for the betterment of Aboriginal rights against colonial and political forces, though controversy, including “payment” to take photographs of sexual positions for anthropological reasons, hounded him to resignation.

Exhibition of Female Flagellants Parts I and II; Lady Bumtickler’s Revels
AU$200 Read MoreAdd to cartAnonymous
London [Tours]: G. Peacock [Imp. E. Arrault et Cie], 1777, 1785, and n.d. [1907].The first three of the seven parts of The Library Illustrative of Social Progress, here reset as a single composite volume. The series was issued clandestinely by John Camden Hotten around 1872, each part under its own false London imprint (1777, 1785, and undated respectively), and a fabricated editorial pedigree: Hotten claimed the texts came “from the original editions collected by” the historian Henry Thomas Buckle. Ashbee in the Index Librorum Prohibitorum disputes this asserting that the volumes had in fact been reprinted, without permission, from a private collection, likely his. This is not Hotten’s printing but a later resetting of these three parts, without plates, continuously paginated where Hotten’s originals are separate. The text carries a false Paris bookselling address on the wrappers but a genuine printer’s mark at the tail of the final page (Imp. E. Arrault et Cie, of Tours, dated 4 March 1907) placing actual production in provincial France some thirty-five years after Hotten’s original printing, behind both an invented London title-page imprint and an invented Paris point of sale. Not in Mendes. Ashbee discusses the constituent texts at length in the Index Librorum Prohibitorum, vol. I.

Le Vice Marin: Confessions d’un Matelot
AU$1,500 Read MoreAdd to cartJean Bosc
Paris: Pierre Douville, [1905].A French maritime novel centred on homosexual desire aboard ship, and a notable document in the literary history of same-sex desire. The first part of the story explicitly confronts the “marine vice” of pederasty. The book attracted controversy, prompting later issues to appear under the more discreet title ‘Les Isoles: Moeurs Maritimes’. In a preface to the retitled edition, dated 15 March 1905, Bosc complained that Le Vice Marin had “frightened the bourgeoisie” and that newspaper editors refused even to advertise it, forcing his publisher to disguise a commercially successful book beneath a less provocative title. The episode provides a revealing glimpse of the constraints surrounding the public discussion of homosexuality in Belle Epoque France. The novel prefigures later maritime treatments of adolescent sexuality, including the controversy surrounding James Hanley’s Boy (1931). Its place in the period’s homosexual self-understanding is seen in Georges Portal’s 1936 Un Protestant, whose narrator discovers the book in a shop window and recognises in it a reflection of his own experience. With two illustrations.

Les 120 Journees de Sodome ou l’Ecole du Libertinage par le Marquis de Sade
AU$6,500 Read MoreAdd to cartMarquis de Sade; Eugene Duhren [Iwan Bloch]
Paris: Club des Bibliophiles, 1904.The first printed edition and editio princeps of the text, based on the notorious manuscript written by Donatien Alphonse François, Marquis de Sade in the Bastille in 1785. The manuscript, composed in minute script on a continuous paper roll, was long presumed lost following the storming of the Bastille, before resurfacing in the late nineteenth century and coming into the hands of the Berlin physician and pioneering sexologist Iwan Bloch. Bloch prepared the first edition, editing and annotating the text under the pseudonym Eugene Duhren, and issued it via the Berlin bookseller Max Harrwitz, using a fictive Paris imprint to mitigate censorship concerns. In his introduction, Bloch framed the work as a document of scientific and anthropological interest, intended for specialists in sexual pathology, jurisprudence, and cultural history. The text, as here presented, is incomplete and editorially imperfect, deficiencies later addressed in Maurice Heine’s critical edition of 1931-35, prepared from direct examination of the autograph manuscript, yet this remains the foundational printed appearance. One of 200 numbered copies, this being one of 160 printed on laid paper. Together with the rare original subscription prospectus by Max Harrwitz, three leaves (29cm x 11.cm), folded vertically and complete with original cord.

The Electric Automobile: Its Construction, Care and Operation
AU$400 Read MoreAdd to cartC. E. Woods
Chicago and New York: Herbert S. Stone & Company, 1900.One of the earliest monographs devoted to electric vehicles, covering their construction, maintenance, and practical operation at a time when electrics were serious competitors to petrol-powered cars. Clinton Edgar Woods (1863-1927), an electrical and mechanical engineer, founded the Woods Motor Vehicle Company in Chicago in 1896 and was a committed advocate of electric propulsion, anticipating that both electric and gasoline vehicles would displace horse-drawn transport. Writing at a moment when the relative futures of electric and gasoline power remained uncertain (though the limitations of battery range were already apparent) Woods expresses a cautious scepticism that would, for much of the following century, be borne out by the dominance of the internal combustion engine. “Will not a battery some time be made to run a vehicle 100 or more miles on one charge? While this may be possible, the writer hardly thinks it probable.”

A Critical Revision of the Genus Eucalyptus (75 Parts in 8 Volumes)
AU$4,000 Read MoreAdd to cartJ. H. Maiden; Margaret Flockton
Sydney: William Applegate Gullick, John Spence, and Adam James Kent, Government Printers, 1903-1931.A complete set, being 75 parts in 8 volumes, containing over 3000 pages and 304 plates, 12 of which are in colour, and 4 of which are maps, of Joseph Henry Maidens masterpiece in the field of botanical research, and his major taxonomical work alongside his Forest Flora of New South Wales. The set is illustrated chiefly with lithographs by Margaret Flockton, together with several by Matilda Smith, a facsimile of L’Heritier, and 4 maps, as well as a photographic illustration by L. C. Webster, and a photographic portrait of Maiden in one of the posthumous volumes therein also published an obituary by Richard Hind Cambage. The project, which took 28 years to be published, the final parts prepared by Maiden before his death in 1925 and published posthumously edited by Cambage and William Blakely, was an extension of the work started by Ferdinand von Mueller and George Bentham in Flora Australiensis and continued by Mueller in his Eucalyptographia, devising classifications based on the characteristics of the stamens, and remained an important reference for many years. Maidens study of eucalyptus was completed alongside his duties as Government Botanist and Director of the Botanic Gardens, which he commenced in 1896. A talented and enthusiastic botanist Maiden established the colony’s first herbarium, the National Herbarium of New South Wales, together with a museum and library. Among his many studies and achievements he was also responsible for the construction of Sydneys first playground and worked tirelessly to develop the educational value of the Botanical Gardens for all Australians.
