Pink Triangle Concentration Camp Prisoner-Identification Badge
AU$2,500 Read MoreAdd to cartGermany: , c. 1937-1945.
Beginning in 1937 the SS marked concentration camp prisoners with colour-coded inverted cloth triangles sewn to the uniform, denoting the official grounds for imprisonment. The pink triangle marked prisoners categorised by the SS as homosexual. Prisoners so marked were, by multiple survivor and historical accounts, subject to particularly severe treatment within the camp hierarchy. The symbol was reclaimed from the 1970s onward as a symbol of gay liberation and pride. Surviving examples of the badge are held in institutional collections including the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Arolsen Archives; comparatively few are thought to survive outside institutional hands. This example has been stored for a number of decades in the warehouse of London Judaica dealer Jonathan Fishburn (Fishburn Books), and was acquired at Firsts London 2026.

Les 120 Journees de Sodome, ou l’Ecole du Libertinage, par le Marquis de Sade
AU$3,500 Read MoreAdd to cartMarquis de Sade; Maurice Heine; Andre Collot
Paris: S. & C., aux Depens des Bibliophiles Souscripteurs, 1931-36.The first critical edition of the text, and the first established directly from the autograph manuscript written by Donatien Alphonse François, Marquis de Sade in the Bastille in 1785. The manuscript, composed in minute script on a continuous paper roll, was long presumed lost following the storming of the Bastille, before resurfacing in the late nineteenth century and coming into the hands of the Berlin physician and pioneering sexologist Iwan Bloch, whose foundational but flawed 1904 edition first brought the text into print. Following Bloch’s death, the manuscript entered French ownership (often associated with the patronage circle of Charles de Noailles and Marie-Laure de Noailles, a descendant of Sade), enabling the Sade specialist Maurice Heine to prepare the present edition under their support. Working directly from the autograph roll, Heine produced a transcription of far greater fidelity than Bloch’s, accompanied by a substantial critical apparatus keyed to the original manuscript and including a photographic facsimile as frontispiece. Heine’s engagement with Sade was both scholarly and personal: he first encountered the work through Bloch’s edition in 1912, later recalling (most notably in the 1933 ‘Minotaure enquete’ organised by Andre Breton and Paul Eluard) that discovery as decisive. Pascal Pia would subsequently credit Heine with establishing the modern text of Sade. Issued in a limited edition of 396 numbered copies, this example is one of 300 on velin de Rives. It is here bound with the complete suite of sixteen lithographs by Andre Collot, separately issued in a limited edition (c. 1936) and intended for addition to subscribers’ sets and unsold copies.

The Crisis by Eugene Field
AU$500 Read MoreAdd to cartEugene Field; [Colin B. Berckelman]
Athens [ie. Sydney]: The Vaginal Press, 1938.The vulgarity of the sexual slang in this scurrilous, pseudonymously published piece of verse would have been regarded in 1938 Australia as being at the very extremes of obscenity. Written and “hand-printed for subscribers only” by bibliophile Colin Berckelman in an (unsurprisingly) small edition of 25 copies, the publication can now be considered a genuine rarity: 11 of the 25 copies have found their way into public collections. Berckelman’s use of the non-de-plume Eugene Field is almost certainly an allusion to the late nineteenth century American writer of the same name who, aside from producing poetry for young readers, wrote The Love Affairs of a Bibliomaniac (1896). Berckelman, for reasons that were either genuine or perverse, evidently felt some affinity with Field. “On top, the pumping method; or lying on the side, Or spread upon her billowing bum, a-la the blushing bride, Or stand up, or sitting down, or resting on all four, Whereby the visitor could take his choice of either door, Or dressed, or naked,… every way her genius could invent To catch the silvery substance that tickleth as ’tis spent.”

Sydney: Vale & Pearson, 1933.Biography of Joseph Pearson (1849-1939), draper, one of Australia’s early cyclists, and map publisher. First published in 1925, Pearson published this revised edition in 1933. “When Pearson toured Britain and the Continent in 1893, he rode some 3500 miles (5633 km). He bought road maps and, inspired by them, vowed to persuade his fellow cyclists ‘to take an occasional tour in the country … to get into our wide spaces’. In 1896 he published the Cyclists’ Touring Guide of New South Wales, which contained many practical hints. He agitated for the erection of road signs and that year helped to found the New South Wales Cyclists’ Touring Union, serving on the executive board. His early road and touring material provided the basis for the union’s two-volume Handbook, and Guide to the Roads of New South Wales (Sydney, 1898), the most detailed guide ever published in Australia.” (ADB) This copy signed on the wrappers upper panel, as usual.

A Critical Revision of the Genus Eucalyptus (75 Parts in 8 Volumes)
AU$4,000 Read MoreAdd to cartJ. H. Maiden; Margaret Flockton
Sydney: William Applegate Gullick, John Spence, and Adam James Kent, Government Printers, 1903-1931.A complete set, being 75 parts in 8 volumes, containing over 3000 pages and 304 plates, 12 of which are in colour, and 4 of which are maps, of Joseph Henry Maidens masterpiece in the field of botanical research, and his major taxonomical work alongside his Forest Flora of New South Wales. The set is illustrated chiefly with lithographs by Margaret Flockton, together with several by Matilda Smith, a facsimile of L’Heritier, and 4 maps, as well as a photographic illustration by L. C. Webster, and a photographic portrait of Maiden in one of the posthumous volumes therein also published an obituary by Richard Hind Cambage. The project, which took 28 years to be published, the final parts prepared by Maiden before his death in 1925 and published posthumously edited by Cambage and William Blakely, was an extension of the work started by Ferdinand von Mueller and George Bentham in Flora Australiensis and continued by Mueller in his Eucalyptographia, devising classifications based on the characteristics of the stamens, and remained an important reference for many years. Maidens study of eucalyptus was completed alongside his duties as Government Botanist and Director of the Botanic Gardens, which he commenced in 1896. A talented and enthusiastic botanist Maiden established the colony’s first herbarium, the National Herbarium of New South Wales, together with a museum and library. Among his many studies and achievements he was also responsible for the construction of Sydneys first playground and worked tirelessly to develop the educational value of the Botanical Gardens for all Australians.
