Paris: Georges Guillit, 1947.A libertine novel first published in 1775, Nerciat’s Felicia ou mes fredaines was repeatedly suppressed by the authorities, with illustrated editions particularly liable to seizure and prosecution. Louis Icart (1888-1950) the French Art Deco illustrator best known for his erotic and fashionable feminine imagery, supplied twenty original colour etchings for this edition, printed by Joseph Zichieri. One of 30 numbered artist’s copies (from a total edition of 530), this copy in a fine signed binding by H. Jacquet-Riffieux incorporating a textile onlay of a nude female figure.

New York: Suzan Pitt, 1984.Beginning in 1984, Suzan Pitt (1943-2019) painted a series of one-of-a-kind wearable artworks for The A. More Store, a project of the New York artists’ collective COLAB. Later that year they were sold through Patricia Field’s East 8th Street boutique alongside works by Keith Haring and Stephen Sprouse. Pitt described the coats as unique artworks that could be either worn or hung on the wall, combining imagery drawn from popular culture, her animated films, and her watercolours into layered visual narratives of free association. Pitt is thought to have produced between fifty and one hundred painted coats during the 1980s before concentrating on the production of her animated film Joy Street. She returned to the format in 2016 in collaboration with House of Byfield. Sexuality was a persistent subject in Pitt’s work well before the coats. Her early film Crocus (1971) established a recurring association in her animation between sexuality and vegetal and floral forms, carried further in Asparagus (1979), a film noted on release for its frank sexual imagery and remembered for its pairing with David Lynch’s Eraserhead on the midnight-movie circuit. The present coat, its title taken from the painted text across the upper back, extends this preoccupation into wearable form, setting sexually explicit illustrations and lettering against appropriated cartoon imagery of Mickey Mouse and Goofy. This example belongs to the original 1984 series and is signed and dated by the artist.

Offered here together with: the Biba company newspaper ‘Welcome to the New Biba’ [London, 1973], produced to mark the opening of the Big Biba department store in Kensington; a Biba Food Hall paper bag; a Biba plastic carry bag; the exhibition catalogue ‘Biba: The Label, The Lifestyle, The Look’ (Leicester Museum and Art Gallery, 1993); and ‘In Biba: A Graphic Romance’ by Delisia Howard, illustrated by Chris Price, with foreword and additional illustrations by Barbara Hulanicki (London: Hazard Books, 2004). Biba was founded by Barbara Hulanicki and Stephen Fitz-Simon in 1964 as a mail-order fashion label, becoming one of the defining names of London’s Swinging Sixties and early 1970s style. Rejecting conventional catalogue photography, the mail-order catalogues were conceived as fashion editorials, featuring original work by Donald Silverstein, Hans Feurer, Helmut Newton, Sarah Moon, and Harri Peccinotti. Combining innovative graphic design with editorial fashion photography, they rank among the landmarks of late-1960s British fashion publishing.

Tokyo: Kokusho Kankokai, 2012.Hosoe (1933-2024) co-founded the VIVO photography collective in 1959 with Ikko Narahara, Shomei Tomatsu, Kikuji Kawada, and Akira Sato, and went on to collaborate with Yukio Mishima on ‘Barakei’ (Ordeal by Roses, 1963) and with the butoh dancer Tatsumi Hijikata on ‘Kamaitachi’ (1969). This volume gathers 125 mostly previously unpublished portraits of 35 of Japan’s leading twentieth-century artists, photographed in their youth over the course of Hosoe’s career. Subjects include the butoh dancers Tatsumi Hijikata, Kazuo Ohno, Min Tanaka, and Yoko Ashikawa, alongside Yayoi Kusama, Yukio Mishima, Masuo Ikeda, Shuji Terayama, and Hosoe’s VIVO co-founder Akira Sato, among others. Limited to 1,500 unnumbered copies. This copy signed by Hosoe to the front free endpaper.

The Legman Book of Sex

: George Rhoads, 1954.A unique artist’s book by the American painter and sculptor George Rhoads (1926-2021) as a gift for his friend, the erotologist and folklorist Gershon Legman (1917-1999). The two met in Paris shortly after Rhoads’ arrival there in 1952, bonding over origami. The discipline of mechanical precision inherent in origami arguably foreshadows his later complex audiokinetic ball machine sculptures. Rhoads is known to have sent Legman letters embellished with foldings and comic drawings throughout the 1950s and 1960s (a small number of models survive in the Legman archive at the Origami Art Museum, Colonia del Sacramento), but the present volume is a substantially more ambitious and apparently earlier production, made in the opening years of their friendship, and directed squarely toward Legman’s lifelong scholarly fascination with erotic folklore and bawdy humour. The 58 leaves are each illustrated on the recto with original cartoon drawings. The first sixteen leaves carry two short erotic tales: one of ten leaves concerns the tale of a sex maniac; the second, of six leaves, recounts the adventures of “five little Fuckers and how they blew”; the remaining forty-two leaves illustrated with standalone erotic cartoons. The front cover with a colour illustrated title, the inside lower board signed by Rhoads with a decorative border, the date supplied in Legman’s hand. Of considerable research interest as a primary-source artefact of the Rhoads-Legman friendship, complementing the surviving body of gifted material preserved in the Legman archive at the Origami Art Museum. The erotic content places it at the intersection of Rhoads’ early Paris work and Legman’s lifelong scholarship on erotic folklore and bawdy humour, later culminating in his major study ‘Rationale of the Dirty Joke’ (First Series 1968; Second Series 1975). Provenance: ex the estate of Gershon Legman by descent via Neil Pearson.

Emile Gebhart’s three medieval tales: Les trois rois, La derniere nuit de Judas, and Alleluia! presented in one of the great illustrated books of the Art Nouveau period. Alphonse Mucha provided the complete decorative programme: cover design, title-page decoration, limitation page, colophon, and 78 individual headpiece compositions with elaborate floral borders enclosing the text, each hand-coloured by au pochoir. This copy, No. 1, contains an original full-page mixed-media drawing in pencil and watercolour on Japon, signed ‘Mucha’ at lower right, depicting a young woman in flowing drapery and broad knotted sash, her hair loose to her waist beneath a patterned headband, in profile with her hands raised to her collarbone, a detailed study for the main figure featured in the vignette on page 69. Also bound in are a complete suite in colour on Japon of the 78 borders and vignettes and the three designs for the title, limitation, and colophon, together with a second state in black on China paper. The original wrappers and prospectus are retained. The prospectus established a hierarchy of 252 copies in five categories, of which the ten copies on Japon with original watercolours (priced at 550 francs each) ranked only below the unique parchment and satin copies (priced at 1,000 and 800 francs), both entirely reworked by the artist, and above 25 further copies on Japon without watercolour and 215 copies on velin de Rives. The prospectus also noted explicitly that trade discount on the watercolour copies excluded “the cost of the watercolour executed by the artist”, formally distinguishing the value of the Mucha original from that of the book at the point of publication. Provenance: Acquired in 1947 by Albert Quesnot (1882-1954), first violinist with the Paris Opera, thence by descent, retained in the family home until 2026, when acquired at auction in Paris. Fresh to the market after nearly eighty years of unbroken family ownership.

An early version of what would become, in heavily edited form, chapter 7 of Babbs’ 2011 Vietnam novel, Who Shot the Water Buffalo?. The novel originated from a manuscript Babbs began during his service as a Marine helicopter pilot in Vietnam (1962-63) and took nearly fifty years to reach publication. The present pamphlet is the only known separate printing of any portion of that manuscript, preserving a pre-publication text substantially different from the finished novel. Los Angeles: Los Angeles Diggers, 1967.Complete run of the three issues published by the Los Angeles Diggers, also known as the Digger Creative Society, an underground counterculture group active in Los Angeles during the summer of 1967. The paper changed its title with each issue. Inspired by the San Francisco Diggers but apparently not organisationally linked to them, the Los Angeles group ran a free store, distributed free food, and arranged emergency housing and free medical care in anticipation of a mass influx of hippies to the city over the summer. The papers were distributed free through local head shops with an optional donation, and reported on these activities alongside coverage of love-ins and related events.

The first three issues edited by Trina Beaumont (formerly Trina Taylor), the last by Caroline Joyce taking the reins.

Diana Georgeff’s biography of Lea records that their garden there was given over largely to herbs and useful plants, and that Webb was fully occupied making tinctures, compounds and extracts; Lea called her the best herbalist in Australia.
